Consider your natural lip color
According to Yahoo’s beauty editor Julie Giusti, a good rule of thumb for picking a lipstick shade is looking at the color of your natural lips.
In an interview with Allure, Giusti said that “Women with pale lips look best in cherry red or coral; for naturally reddish lips, try hot pink, orange, or cranberry; for dark lips, brick red and burgundy are ideal.” This method is fool-proof for when you are in a rush!
Find your undertones
When shopping for foundations, you have probably heard the terms “neutral”, “warm”, and “cool.” Those terms refer to undertones, the underlying hue of your skin are used to determine which foundation will match best with your skin tone.
What is a neutral undertone? A skin tone in which there is no obvious underlying hue peeking through the skin.
What is a warm undertone? A skin tone in which there are hints of yellow, gold, or peach hues.
What is a cool undertone? A skin tone in which there are hints of blueish or pink.
A quick assessment of your preferences can help determine your undertone.
First, take a look at your wrist. What color are your veins, predominantly?
If your veins appear blue or purple, you likely have a cool undertone.
If your veins appear green, you likely have a warm undertone.
If you can’t tell if they are blue or green, then you likely have a neutral undertone.
Secondly, if you sunbathe without sunscreen and your skin usually burns, you likely have a cool undertone. People with cool undertones have less melanin. However, dark skinned women can have cool undertones despite the melanin in their skin.
If your skin rarely burns and you tan, you likely have a warm undertone. People with warm undertones usually have more melanin, and therefore tan rather than burn. This category also applies to people with neutral skin tones.
Third, let’s analyze the kind of jewelry you wear.
If you think you look better in silver jewelry, you likely have cool undertones.
If you think you look better in gold jewelry, you likely have warm undertones.
People with neutral undertones usually look as good with either kind of jewelry.
Once you figure out your undertones, every beauty choice becomes easier! Of course, you should always wear what makes you feel beautiful, and your makeup or clothing colors matching your undertones shouldn’t loom over your mind. However, it is always good to have safe, go-to choices.
COOL SKIN TONES
The best lipstick for people with cool undertones are shades with blue or purple undertones. Try steering away from very light colors, as they tend to wash you out. When choosing plum or red shades, move away from colors that pull yellow or orange.
